Rampant rhino attacks Dutch tourists in Addo

Garden Route - Two Dutch tourists were lucky to escape with their lives after a rampaging black rhino attacked them in the Addo Elephant National Park, clambering onto the bonnet of their hired car in a bid to ram them. The incident has been described by wildlife experts as “unprecedented”, while staff at Addo say it is the first recorded incident of a wild animal damaging a tourist vehicle in the history of the park.

SANParks regional spokesman Megan Taplin said on Monday Hans and Jannie Reedijk, of Hoeksche Waard in the Netherlands, had entered the Addo park at about 7am on Saturday for a day visit.

“They spotted a rhino coming out the bush and stopped their vehicle in the hope of taking a photo.

“Much to their surprise, the rhino ran towards the vehicle and collided with it, badly damaging the car.”

Taplin said the rhino had apparently half clambered onto the bonnet of the car. “Its foot went onto the bonnet, crumpling it. Its head shattered the windscreen and its horn hit the outside of the roof, centimetres from Mrs Reedijk in the passenger seat.”

The Reedijks were not injured but were helped by park staff to report the incident to the police and the hire car company, which provided a replacement car within a few hours.
